Built in 1912, this iconic twelve storey sandstone clad building stands proud on the intersection of George and Market Streets in Sydney’s central business district. It is a stark reminder of days gone by and a fine example of Inter-War Commercial Palazzo style.
It was purpose built for the Gowings company, and the signage remains a prominant fixture to both sides of the building, marking the entry points, to what used to be the Gowings Department Store. In it’s glory days, it was one of the most prominent and famous department stores in Sydney, specialising in men’s casual clothing, camping gear and novelty items.
This last remaining Gowings store only closed it’s doors 6 years ago in January 2006. The building was then taken over by the clothing brand Supre, which ended it’s lease in 2011.
But that’s enough of the history lesson.... What’s in store for the Gowings Building?
The future of the Gowings Building is very rosie indeed, with the UK retailing giant Topshop, Topman set to make it’s home here in 2012. Following the huge success of the 1st Topshop opening it’s doors on Chapel Street, Melbourne late last year, it’s 2nd store in Sydney is sure to be huge.
The Topshop brand residing in Gowings, will breathe a new life into this iconic building and inject an immense amount of traffic, attention and energy into and around the city! Topshop Chapel Street turned over $1.2 million on it’s first day of trade, and it’s neighbouring stores have all reported sales growth of 10% since Topshop opened. And it’s no surprise given how this brand dominates the retail industry, and the incredible buzz they generate with their fantastic product, marketing and PR efforts!
The Studio Ginger team have a nice connection with the Topshop brand, spanning back a fair few years, when our now Creative DIrector in Sydney, Tim Bradbury, was an integral design lead for the store concept working with Zebra in the UK. When the brand was set to land on Australian shores we were absolutley thrilled to deliver it’s Melbourne store, and we are thoroughly enjoying working on the Sydney store, due to open later this year.
